Halloween Howlers: Frightfully Funny Knock-Knock Jokes
My daughter and I love Halloween and she loves jokes, so we expected to love Halloween Howlers: Frightfully Funny Knock-Knock Jokes by author Michael Teitelbaum and illustrator Jannie Ho. Jannie Ho is based in Ann Arbor, runs Chickengirl Design, and has illustrated many children’s books for a variety of ages. Chickengirl Design sent us a copy of Halloween Howlers: Frightfully Funny Knock-Knock Jokes to review.
As soon as the package arrived and my daughter saw the cover she could not wait to read it. She picked it to read over the Magic Treehouse book she was part way through. That was a definite positive sign for the book and its cover.
My daughter enjoyed the book, but I definitely recommend this as a book that you read to your child instead of having them read. She reads well and is learning to put emotion into her reading. However, understanding the Knock-Knock jokes required knowing how to read the joke – running words together or saying them with a “vampire voice”. Once I re-read the jokes to her with the proper intonation she understood them much better. Some of the jokes were better than others. The illustrations were definitely the best part of the book for me. They included all of the elements of Halloween without the spookiness. Based on the illustrations I would definitely recommend other books illustrated by Jannie Ho.
Jannie Ho has illustrated several other books that would be great for Halloween:
- Peek Inside: Halloween Is Here! (Peek Inside Sticker Books)
- The Haunted Ghoul Bus
- You Can Draw Monsters and Other Scary Things
There are also several winter holiday books:
Her newest release is Road Work Ahead which was released in September 2011. Road Work Ahead was written by Anastasia Suen. The age level for the book is listed as 3-5. The book tells the story of a trip to Grandma’s and all of the construction sites they pass on the way – sidewalks being poured, streetlights repaired, roads resurfaced, and more.
Chickengirl Design has also had illustrations featured on a Target gift card and the ABC Song iPhone app.
