Preschool Guide: First United Methodist Cooperative Nursery (FUMCN)
Disclaimer: FUMCN is a sponsor of the Ann Arbor with Kids Preschool Guide. All opinions are mine.
FUMCN Preschool will be holding an Open House for the 2014-2015 school year on Wednesday, February 5 from 10-11:30a. With the weather that we have been having this year, they have wisely scheduled a snow date for the following week, February 12 also from 10-11:30a.
FUMCN offers coop classes for both 3 and 4 year olds as well as a Young 5s program. The 3s class meets on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, the 4s class on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, and a 3/4s multi-age class on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoons. The Young 5s class meets Monday through Friday mornings with a possible afternoon session based on demand.
FUMCN preschool is a caring, stimulating, and secure place for children to learn and grow. We encourage creative thinking and provide opportunities for problem solving to help expand your child’s mind. At FUMCN preschool, children learn by doing. Using a wide variety of materials, they touch, taste, smell, look, and listen. Our emphasis is on learning through play and social interaction.
Parental participation is integral to this learning process. At FUMCN preschool we aim to enhance the parents’ understanding of their children and to develop better parent-child relationships. Most experts agree that involvement in your child’s education greatly increases the likelihood of your child developing high self-esteem. An added benefit for parents is the contact with other parents, with whom you can share the joys and concerns of child rearing. The opportunity for forming friendships exists not just for the children, but for the parents as well.
Membership in the First United Methodist Cooperative Nursery School is open to everyone, regardless of race, creed, sex, family composition, or nationality and ethnic origin.
In addition, they have asked me to share about the following programs:
In addition to the scheduled classroom hours, students have the option to participate in our Explorer’s Club! There is a fee for participation in the program which meets on Wednesday afternoons and introduces students to additional curriculum on the topics of My Body, Cooking and Nutrition, Science, Animals, and Art, during five-week terms and provides a full-day experience on Wednesdays for children in the Fours and Young Fives morning program.
All students also have the option to participate in the no-cost Wednesday lunch club! Students bring their lunch from home and eat it at school with friends to prepare them for managing their own lunch during Kindergarten. Parents should expect to supervise once per term.
We schedule Field Trips for all the classes, Threes and Fours visit places including, but not limited to, the Fire Station, Farmer’s Market, Leslie Science Center, and Plymouth Orchard. The Young Fives have weekly Field Trips including those locations listed above plus the Planetarium, Yost Ice Arena, University of Michigan science laboratories, Emma Acres Farm, and many more!
We introduce STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) topics in the curriculum, especially in the Young Fives Program. Following the ice skating field trip to Yost Ice Arena, Miss Susan prepared a lesson on solid, liquid, and gaseous forms of water and the students experimented with taking temperatures and observing changes in the state of matter.
If you also have younger children at home, you may be interested in their Sibling Care Program and Two Year Old Playgroup.
Sibling Care Program
FUMCN offers an optional Sibling Care Program for siblings to play and have fun in the nursery room while parents or caregivers are assisting in the classroom. There is a fee for participation in the program which covers the wages of the designated caregivers.
Two Year Olds
FUMCN also offers a no-cost Two-Year Old Playgroup which allows siblings of students and members of the public to form a voluntary co-op which meets on Mondays in the nursery room for socialization and fun!
