Schedule for Martin Luther King Jr Day

With the kids home from school, there are plenty of activities to keep them busy.

If you want to do any outdoor activities, today is the day before the return of the polar vortex. Temperatures are supposed to drop from the high 20s now to low 20s by mid-day, but at least they aren’t in the teens or single digits as forecasted highs for the next week are. I am considering sledding as an option today.

The Ann Arbor Hands-on Museum is offering a discounted admission price of $4 today. They will also have Science of Toys from 10a-4p which include hands on experiments which will use toys to explore physics, logic puzzles, and how the world works. Dr Zeemo the Yo-Yo man will perform at 10:30a and 1p.

The Henry Ford Museum is having a Target Family Day with FREE Admission today. In addition to the free admission, they will have make and take activities, hands-on fun, dramatic presentations, and possibly a scavenger hunt. Expect the museum to be crowded with free admission. Other Target Family Day dates for 2014 are February 17 (President’s Day), September 1 (Labor Day), and November 4 (Election Day). My daughter loves the Henry Ford Museum and we go frequently. This is also one of your last chances to catch James Cameron’s AVATAR: The Exhibition™ which closes on January 26.

The North American International Auto Show at Cobo Center in Detroit is also an option today. We visited the auto show yesterday and had fun, look for a review later today. Tickets are $13/adult. Children 6 and under are free with a parent and children 7-12 (and seniors 65+) are $7. Tickets can be purchased online, but tickets need to be picked up at will call as there is no print at home option (and you cannot purchase a child’s ticket online. They had plenty of credit card kiosks with no wait and event the cash booths did not have significant lines.

If your child is starting to outgrow their winter clothing, the Ann Arbor PTO Thrift Shop Sale is today.

There are special hours at Buhr Park Ice Rink (noon-2p), Veterans Memorial Ice Rink (11:10a-1p), Xtreme Bounce Zone (10a-8p) and Jump City (10a-3p).

Learning Express also has three Make a Plate Workshops at 11a, 1p, and 2p. Space is limited, so I suggest calling to reserve your spot if they have any left.

If you want to escape from the frigid temps, consider warming up at Goldfish Swim School’s Family Swim from noon-1:30p. Family Swim is free for Goldfish Swim School Members and $5/non-members.

Finally, the Ann Arbor District Library has a special MLK Day Event: Biakuye Percussion Group at Downtown Branch of AADL from 1-2p. The event is for ages Kindergarten through adults.

If you were considering one of the UM museums (Natural History, Archaeology, or Art Museum), I suggest changing your plans. They are closed today (Archaeology and Art Museum are typically closed on Monday).

Ann Arbor with Kids is your go-to source for Ann Arbor Family Fun. It got its start in an activity list that I was compiling for the playgroup I ran at our church. When my daughter started preschool, the other moms were thrilled to hear about my list. I decided to take the list public in 2009.
