Day Out with Thomas at Greenfield Village

Does your child love Thomas the Train? My daughter loved Thomas as a Toddler and Preschooler. One of her favorite annual events was Day Out with Thomas. It was such a treat for her to be able to ride on Thomas and participate in the activities.

Each spring Greenfield Village’s hosts Day Out with Thomas, typically on 3 weekends in April and May. This year’s dates are April 26-27, May 3-4, and May 10-11. We attended Day Out with Thomas at Greenfield Village twice when my daughter was younger. We also attended Day Out with Thomas at Crossroads Village and Huckleberry Railroad once.

We really enjoyed Day out With Thomas each time that we attended. My daughter loved getting to ride on Thomas and having her picture taken with him. They also had lots of activities including story time, stamps, play tables. One of her favorite activities was always the Thomas LEGO tables (at the time LEGO had the Thomas license). She also enjoyed exploring Greenfield Village.

Beyond the Thomas activities, they also had other related activities. There have typically been a train display, pedal cars, bubbles, and much more. Plus, all of the Greenfield Village buildings are open.

Your admission ticket for Day Out with Thomas includes a timed ride on Thomas and entry to the Village. You may enter the Village at any time, but should plant to arrive a minimum of 35 minutes prior to your ride – about a 20 minute walk to the rail station from the parking lot and you should plan to arrive to the rail station 15 minutes before your ride for pictures and to wait in the boarding line.

I recommend Day Out with Thomas for families with children age 4 and under. Even at 4, my daughter was as interested in exploring Greenfield Village as she was in participating in the Thomas the Train activities. We visited Greenfield Village on a Thomas weekend when she was 5, and she did not even ask about any of the Thomas activities or riding on Thomas.

Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village Members receive free admission and pay $11.75/person age 1 and over for the Thomas the Tank Experience. Otherwise, your Thomas ticket includes Greenfield Village admission $11.75/child ages 1-4, $29.25/ages 5-12, $35.75/adult 13-61, $33.75/senior 62+. There is also a $5 parking charge for non-members. Tickets are currently on sale.

Greenfield Village also offers a Railroaders Breakfast option for Day Out with Thomas. The Railroaders Breakfast is from 8-9a and concludes with a 9a ride on Thomas. The Village Hobo and Sir Topham Hatt will be visiting breakfast which will also include railroad-themed storytelling and music by the Picks & Sticks Stringband. Breakfast is held at Taste of History and includes buttermilk pancakes, fruit salad, sausage, cereal bar and mini-muffins with orange juice, and coffee or tea to drink. Ann Arbor with Kids is your go-to source for Ann Arbor Family Fun. It got its start in an activity list that I was compiling for the playgroup I ran at our church. When my daughter started preschool, the other moms were thrilled to hear about my list. I decided to take the list public in 2009.
