Memorial Day Weekend Roundup

I can’t believe that it is already Memorial Day Weekend. This weekend is the unofficial start to summer (there are still 3 weeks of school left). While the weather has been less than warm after the spring that we had, there are some warm temperatures coming up. Memorial Day Weekend marks the opening of local pools, splash pads, and other water activities.

My daughter loves the water and swimming, so we are considering trying to fit swimming into our schedule this weekend…probably Sunday or Monday when the weather is predicted to be a little warmer. This morning I added information on Tot Splash at the Ann Arbor Parks Pools to the website. However, Tot Splash will not start until June 16.

*One option that I am leaning towards is a trip to Blue Heron Bay at Independence Lake. Since our weather has been so cold, I am afraid the pool or Rolling Hills will be too cold for me. However, the water at the splash pad should be a bit warmer since it is constantly recirculated and only in small pools. We visited Blue Heron Bay at the end of the season last year and my daughter and her friends had a great time and were asking to return.* Update, midnight: About 4p on Friday, Independence Lake posted on their Facebook page that they are having mechanical problems at Blue Heron Bay and they will be closed through Tuesday. Stay tuned to make sure they open on Wednesday.

At Rolling Hills we have found that the new slides (added last year) also warm up faster as they just have a splash chute instead of a large pool. Likewise the shallow lazy river tends to warm faster than the large wave pool/swim pool. The splash parks in Canton and Plymouth also open this weekend.

Of course as Memorial Day Weekend, there big movie releases. This spring my husband and daughter watched all of the X-Men movies, so she is very excited for X-Men: Days of Future Past. We are making plans to see the movie this weekend. X-Men: Days of Future Past is rated PG-13, so use your discretion as to whether it is appropriate for your child(ren). In kids movies this weekend, Rio 2 still has matinee showings at both Quality 16 and Rave.

It is a great weekend to visit the Toledo Zoo which is celebrating the opening of Penguin Beach, Flamingo Key, and ‘Keet Retreat.

Ann Arbor Hands On Museum will have their Hands-On Hodgepodge activities on Saturday and Sunday, but will be closed on Monday for Memorial Day. Likewise, Xtreme Bounce Zone has added hours for Saturday and Sunday this weekend, but will be closed on Monday.

Saturday’s weather is looking like a nice afternoon for a picnic…the Ypsilanti Symphony Orchestra Free Concert is at 2p in Riverside Park.

Sunday is a great night to experience Leslie Science & Nature Center’s Fireside Fun which is held once a month on Sundays. This week  is a great night to attend since the kids don’t have school or camp the next day.

Ann Arbor with Kids is your go-to source for Ann Arbor Family Fun. It got its start in an activity list that I was compiling for the playgroup I ran at our church. When my daughter started preschool, the other moms were thrilled to hear about my list. I decided to take the list public in 2009.
