Second Week of Summer Roundup

Did you enjoy your first week of summer vacation last week? After taking a lazy few days and a trip to Michigan’s Adventure on Thursday (look for a review later today or tomorrow), we are kicking off the summer schedule this week with my daughter’s first week of camp. Despite a late night at Top of the Park last night, she was excited to head off to camp this morning. Her camp this week is through Ann Arbor Rec & Ed, one of the sponsors of the Ann Arbor with Kids Summer Camp Guide. If your child is starting to get bored, I recommend checking the list for fun summer camps.

When I look at the calendar for this week, the summer fun continues at Top of the Park. The Ann Arbor Jaycees Carnival also kicks off on Wednesday and runs through Sunday. We always have a great time at the Carnival. Plus, Ann Arbor Restaurant Week is this week. I am taking advantage of my daughter being in camp to enjoy a lunch or two without her and we have a couple of family dinners planned.

The Dollar Movies this week are Journey 2 at Quality 16 each weekday at 10a and The Croods at Rave Cinemas on Tuesday at 10a. Speaking of movies, don’t forget to enter my Giveaway of The LEGO Movie.

Swimming/Splash Pads
It is also a great week for swimming (with the exception of today which has a 50% chance of storms). Aside from the pool in our neighborhood, our favorite place to go swimming is at Rolling Hills which we visited on Saturday (Check my review from last year and my post on updates for 2014). The Ann Arbor Parks pools are also a great choice. Each pool offers Tot Splash hours as well as open swim beginning at 1p. I also recommend swim lessons through the Ann Arbor Parks (either group or private). We also had a lot of fun at Blue Heron Bay, the splash pad at Independence Lake which was added in 2013. I am looking at our schedule to determine when a trip to Blue Heron Bay would fit in. My daughter also had fun last summer at the Plymouth Sprayscape (and awesome playground) when she went with friends last summer. We have also enjoyed the Splash Playground in Canton in past years.

In addition to the regularly scheduled events for toddlers and preschoolers, this week is also Kids Club Live with Detroit Public TV at the Royal Oak Farmers Market with three shows on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Toddlers and Preschoolers will love seeing their favorite PBS Kids characters at the event. Wednesday is also Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed Story Time at Barnes & Noble Ann Arbor. In addition to their Tuesday story time, Nicola’s Books adds Story Time with the Great Lakes Zoological Society at 10:30a on Wednesday. Then, Thursday is Read and Look at Kelsey Museum of Archaeology just for kids ages 4-6.

School Aged
There are several cool events at various local libraries this week that have caught my eye – too bad my daughter is in camp. Candy Kitchen Science at Whittaker Branch of Ypsilanti District Library on Monday at 3p, Coat Hanger Monsters & Dragonfly Clothes Pins at Pittsfield Branch of AADL on Tuesday at 2p, Balloon Critters at Downtown Branch of AADL on Wednesday at 2p, and Eggcellent Engineering at the Pittsfield Branch of AADL (Grades K-8) on Friday at 2p. This week also marks the start of the Ypsilanti District Library’s Feed Your Mind events each weekday. I’ll be adding them to the event calendar later today.

Ann Arbor with Kids is your go-to source for Ann Arbor Family Fun. It got its start in an activity list that I was compiling for the playgroup I ran at our church. When my daughter started preschool, the other moms were thrilled to hear about my list. I decided to take the list public in 2009.
