Summer Weekend Fun

After our first week of summer vacation, summer officially starts at 6:51a on Saturday, June 21. There are plenty of events around Ann Arbor this weekend to celebrate.

Top of the Park has some great events this weekend. Architects of Air started yesterday and runs through Sunday. From what I heard, it was great. We were at Michigan’s Adventure, so we haven’t gotten a chance to try it out. Maybe this weekend. There are KidZone activities by Keith Hafner’s Karate, The Scrap Box, and C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. Although we didn’t make the end of Harry Potter last Sunday night, we had a great time and are thinking of giving Despicable Me 2 a shot Sunday night – it’s a shorter movie and should end about the time my daughter gave out last weekend.

Special events on Saturday include the Grand Opening Celebration at the Ann Arbor Skatepark. I know for fans of the skatepark, it has been a long awaited project. The Color Run also reruns to Ypsilanti on Saturday morning. Fun Day Rentals LLC in Chelsea is also holding their Family Fun Day fundraiser.

With all of the fairy events this weekend, it is obvious that the fairies are big fans of summer. Events include Make a Fairy Doll at Pittsfield Branch of AADL Friday afternoon,  Fairy Day at Nature’s Garden Center Saline on Saturday, Fairy Day at Plymouth Nursery on Saturday and Sunday, and Fairy Day at Nature’s Garden Center Brighton.

Kids Read Comics is at the Downtown Branch of AADL. While the event is more geared for teens and adults, there may be some fun activities for older elementary school children as well.

There is plenty of music this weekend with “An American Salute” by Michigan Philharmonic at Hudson Mills Metropark (8p on Friday), Concerts in the Park: Gemini at Burns Park at 1p on Sunday, and The O>Matics at Top of the Park on Sunday.

For animal lovers, there is Story Time with the Humane Society of Huron Valley at Nicola’s Books and Monarch Butterfly Conservation Kickoff at Leslie Science & Nature Center.

Other cool events include Family Art Studio at University of Michigan Museum of Art, The Physics of Toys Workshop at Barnes & Noble Ann Arbor, Cupcake Wars at Michigan Branch of Ypsilanti District Library (for tweens), and Library Lab: Marshmallow Challenge at Whittaker Branch of Ypsilanti District Library.

Ann Arbor with Kids is your go-to source for Ann Arbor Family Fun. It got its start in an activity list that I was compiling for the playgroup I ran at our church. When my daughter started preschool, the other moms were thrilled to hear about my list. I decided to take the list public in 2009.
