A Busy Weekend Preceding Art Fair

This weekend’s activity calendar seems to be making up for last weekend’s light schedule due to the Fourth of July holiday. Not only are there lots of events, there are a number of popular annual events this weekend…Rolling Sculpture Car Show, Saline Celtic Festival, Jackson Rd Cruise, and Huron River Day. Then, next week is sure to be crazy with Art Fair in town. Although the return of a Polar Vortex is supposed to bring much cooler than normal Art Fair temperatures. This might be a good year to visit Art Fair!

This weekend’s activities kick off today (Friday, July 10) with the Rolling Sculpture Car Show in downtown Ann Arbor starting at 2p. Car enthusiasts will also want to check out the Jackson Rd Cruise on Saturday. LaFontaine Buick GMC is starting the fun a day early with Friday’s Kid’s Day activities including Lightning McQueen and The Avengers from 3-5p.

Saturday’s other big local event is the Saline Celtic Festival at Mill Pond Park. After many years of trying to get there, I think we are finally going to make it this year. Also, on Saturday, is the first annual Ann Arbor Latin Festival at Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds.

Sunday is Huron River Day 2014 with events planned along the Huron River. The biggest events in the area is Huron River Day at Gallup Park with additional events at the adjacent Parker Mill Park. Hudson Mills is also organizing the West River Trail Bike-Hike. You can start celebrating the Huron River tonight with a Full Moon Paddle at Gallup Park.

Since publishing this roundup on Friday, two new events for Sunday have come to my attention.  Mythical Creatures of Ann Arbor is at the Sunday Artisan Market from 11a-4p (at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market). Bricks for Kidz will be at Burns Park for the Mustard’s Retreat Concert  If you stop by their table and signup for their e-newsletter, your child will receive a free LEGO minifigure.

There is plenty to do this weekend for nature/animal lovers with Leslie Science & Nature Center’s Choice Carnival (10a-noon Saturday), Kids Bug Hunt (11a-noon Sat at Hudson Mills Metropark), Critters Up Close at AAHOM (1-4p Saturday and Sunday), and Matthaei Botanical Gardens’ Things with Wings (Sunday 1-4p). It is a great weekend to visit the Hands-On Museum not just for Critters Up Close, but also for their new H2Oh! exhibit which is now open. The exhibit looks like tons of fun and we can’t wait to visit.

This weekend Aladdin & His Wonderful, Magical Lamp, a youth community theater production will be at the Village Theatre Cherry Hill in Canton.

This is also a great weekend to visit the pools and other water activities around Ann Arbor before next week’s cool temperatures (the current forecast shows a high of 66 on Tuesday and 69 on Wednesday). Buhr Park has a Summer Splash Day on Saturday from 2-4p. As far as my daughter is concerned, you can never go wrong with a trip to Rolling Hills or Blue Heron Bay.

The Ann Arbor District Library also has a number of great events planned this weekend. After thoroughly enjoying Roller Coaster Engineering Challenge yesterday, my daughter can’t wait to attend more AADL events. For elementary school aged kids, they are offering Paper Bag Puppets on Saturday at Malletts Creek and Manufacturama (grades 3-5) at Pittsfield or Marshmallow Engineering at Malletts Creek on Sunday. For younger kids, they are offering Dancing Babies with Dianne Dudley at Traverwood Branch on Sunday and Sensations Stations at Malletts Creek Branch this morning. The Ypsilanti Library also has fun events on Saturday with Solar Oven S’mores and Cooking With Magnificent Ming. Plus, don’t miss their free story times/lunches on weekdays all summer long.

Next week is looking fun with the Townie Street Party on Monday, Art Fair begins on Wednesday, Quality 16’s Dollar Movie is The Wizard of Oz, and Rave’s  Summer Movie Clubhouse is Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. The Henry Ford also has Macy’s 2nd Monday at Greenfield Village. Look for more details on next week’s events on Sunday or Monday, or checkout the Upcoming Events list.

Are you still with me? I have two more reminders. Today is FREE Slurpee Day at 7-Eleven from 11a-7p. Plus, it is a great time to register your child for fall sports with Rec & Ed. I am signing my daughter up for soccer again. Priority registration for field hockey ends today while soccer’s priority registration has been extended to July 16.

Ann Arbor with Kids is your go-to source for Ann Arbor Family Fun. It got its start in an activity list that I was compiling for the playgroup I ran at our church. When my daughter started preschool, the other moms were thrilled to hear about my list. I decided to take the list public in 2009.
