Tons of Great Activities this Week

Since this is one of our last free weeks for the summer (other than camps and vacation), I am glad that there are a number of great events for us to attend this week. Did you know that this week is National Farmers Market Week? Be sure to check out some of the Farmers Markets around Ann Arbor this week.

Thursday is the 9th Annual Ann Arbor District Library LEGO Contest and has been marked on our calendar since the date was first announced. Drop-off of LEGO entries is from 9a-3p at Kensington Court near Briarwood Mall with viewing and winner announcements from 6-8:30p. My daughter already has her creation ready to go and just needs to write up her entry sheet. We can’t wait to see all of the other great creations.

The Dollar Movie selections this week are both hits. Quality 16 is showing Willie Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971 version with Gene Wilder) daily at 10a. My daughter just read Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, so I think she will love the movie. Plus, Rave Cinema’s Summer Clubhouse Movie is Rio 2 on Tuesday at 10a.  Tuesday is a perfect day to see one of the movies since there is a 50% chance of thunderstorms in the morning.

After Tuesday the storms are gone from the forecast and the temperatures are in the low 80s, so it is a great chance to finally head to the pools and water parks. With yesterday’s great weather, Rolling Hills was packed when we were there yesterday. I want to try to fit in a trip to Blue Heron Bay at Independence Lake this week.

After enjoying Frozen Friday at Barnes & Noble and TMNT as the Dollar Movie last week, my daughter will be interested in Barnes & Noble’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! event on Monday at 11a.

Beyond the LEGO Contest, AADL has some great events this week for kids. Game Start School will be holding several programming workshops on Mondays and Fridays this month including this afternoon’s Redstone Engineering and Friday’s Computer Animation. I am hoping to interest my daughter in these, but so far she has shown no interest in programming. The week starts with Sensations Stations for toddlers (18 months-2 years) today at 10:30a. Other events include Make a Wand on Wednesday and Ice Cream in a Bag on Thursday. The week concludes with Pajama Jam on Friday night.

Westgate Shopping Center has fun activities this week. Learning Express has fun events with Zingo Play on Tuesday and Rainbow Loom classes on Thursday. Meanwhile Nicola’s Books will have a Young Writers Workshop (age 10+) on Tuesday and Camp Nicola’s Pop Bottle Science (ages 7-12) on Wednesday. These events all require an advance RSVP.

Also this week, Goldfish Swim School begins their new Family Swim hours. Be sure to check the schedule before heading out.

Beyond Ann Arbor, Walking with Dinosaurs – The Arena Spectacular is at the Palace at Auburn Hills. There are also showings of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies in Royal Oak Monday through Wednesday evening.

Ann Arbor with Kids is your go-to source for Ann Arbor Family Fun. It got its start in an activity list that I was compiling for the playgroup I ran at our church. When my daughter started preschool, the other moms were thrilled to hear about my list. I decided to take the list public in 2009.
