Gershwin’s Magic Key – An A2SO Family Concert
Disclosure: The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra has sponsored this post. All opinions are my own.
The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra is kicking off their 2015-2016 Family Concert Season on Sunday, October 25 at 4p with Gershwin’s Magic Key at the Michigan Theater.
Gershwin’s Magic Key
Gershwin’s Magic Key combines the musical performance of Gershwin’s work by the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra with a theatrical performance. The actors will portray a chance meeting on the streets of New York between a poor newspaper boy and George Gershwin.
In the show, as a friendship grows between Gershwin and the boy, they will explore both the melting pot of American music and the boy’s musical potential. The performance will include over 20 of Gershwin’s compositions including Porgy & Bess, American in Paris, and Rhapsody in Blue.
In 2013 my daughter and I attended a similar Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra performance, Beethoven Lives Upstairs. We both really enjoyed the combination of the music with the stories of the life of Beethoven. Having the action on stage made the concert more interesting for my daughter and also helped her to learn more about Beethoven. The Symphony also performed a similar show last year, Mozart’s Magnificent Voyage.
Plan to arrive to the concert early. There will be children’s activities in the lobby of the Michigan Theater from 2:30-3:30p. The pre-show activities are different for each show as they are provided by various local organizations. The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra also hosts an Instrument Petting Zoo. I definitely recommend arriving early for Gershwin’s Magic Key to take advantage of the Pre-Show Activities.
