Thank you for Buying Me this Book
“Thank You for Buying Me This Book”
Those were my daughter’s words to me at bedtime last night. I was very excited to finally have success with a book. Recently, when I suggest a book it’s met with “No Thanks” or I buy a book and it sits and never gets read. To have a book that she starts right away and earns a response like that was awesome!

So what book inspired this success? It was Rocket and Groot: Stranded on Planet Strip Mall! by Tom Angleberger. I’m not surprised that she is loving this book. She loved the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. She has also loved the Star Wars based Origami Yoda series which is also by Tom Angleberger.
She is only on chapter 2, but she only started it last night after finishing her school library book that she wanted to return today. I have a feeling the book will be finished between Girl Scouts and Soccer tonight unless it got left in Dad’s car when he dropped her off at school this morning.
Rocket and Groot is written in the same style as series like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Origami Yoda, and many others that use the same combination of graphics and text. Personally, I got a kick out of the page below which my daughter was on when I went to say good-night.
The book was released in March, but we had never heard of it. I found the book yesterday when we were at Target. I was searching the Cartwheel app on my phone for coupons and found one for Rocket and Groot. I told her there was a book I thought she might like, but not which one. As soon as we found the Middle Reader section, she knew which book I was talking about.
If your child loved Guardians of the Galaxy and enjoyed the Origami Yoda series, I definitely recommend checking out this book!
Other Book Series
Warriors Series by Erin Hunter
My daughter is currently reading the Warriors series by Erin Hunter. She was introduced to them by a friend who gave her the first book for Christmas. She has read about 10 of the books, and is still going – but taking a break for Rocket and Groot.
Origami Yoda Series by Tom Angleberger
As a Star Wars fan, my daughter loves these books. She has read them over and over again. I’d love to see a new edition reflecting the Force Awakens – perhaps featuring “Kylo Pen”.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney
I’ll never forget our 2014 trip to California. My daughter was working her way through the series. A few days before we left, I bought her one of the books with the caveat that she couldn’t read it until our trip. She started in the car on the way to the airport and with the wait time for the plane and the flight time on the first leg (only to Chicago), she had finished the book. We had to buy her the next book in the Chicago airport.
