Taste of Music at Area Farmers Markets

Disclaimer: This post about Taste of Music has been sponsored by Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra. All opinions are my own. Images have been provided by A2SO.

The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra will be bringing a Taste of Music back to a number of local Farmers Markets in July and August of 2016 after previously holding them in 2014 and 2015. The majority of the funding for the program comes from the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan.

Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra's Taste of Music

There are three parts to each Taste of Music event:

  • An Instrument Petting Zoo
  • A Performance by a small group of Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra musicians
  • Free Tickets to A2SO Concerts for Food Assistance Program Participants

There’s nothing like some family fun while you’re shopping at the Farmers Market for fresh, local products.

The Instrument Petting Zoo

My daughter has always loved the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra’s Instrument Petting Zoo. At an Instrument Petting Zoo, Symphony members and volunteers will provide kids with instruction on how to play various instruments. Over the years, my daughter has had the opportunity to try playing various string instruments including the violin and cello. As she is getting older, I should make sure to attend some Instrument Petting Zoos to expose her to more instruments before she has to select an instrument to play in middle school.

Update: We visited the Instrument Petting Zoo on July 13th at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market. My daughter had been leaning towards the flute before testing instruments. When she tried the flute, she found it difficult to play. Next she tried the clarinet and found it easier. Now she’s leaning towards the clarinet. At least they’re both pretty small and easy to transport.

Taste of Music Performances

Each Taste of Music event (except the August 4th event at the Pittsfield Township Farmers Market) will include a performance by a small group from the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra. This is a perfect (free) opportunity to introduce your kids to symphony music. Note that the Instrument Petting Zoo will take a break during the performance and will resume again after the performance.

Free Tickets for Food Assistance Recipients

The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra offers free tickets for those who receive food assistance. The upcoming Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra season offers several fun family-friendly concerts such as The Music of Harry Potter and Peter and the Wolf as well as their annual Holiday Pops concert. If you receive food assistance, be sure to ask a representative of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra at the Farmers Market about the free ticket program.
