Moana Family Movie Night – Connecting with Our Traditions

Tonight we had a Family Movie Night courtesy of Disney. They provided us with a digital copy of Moana, a Google Chromecast, and other movie treats.

Family Movie Night Tradition

A big thread running through the movie Moana is connection with her family and ancestors. A Family Movie Night with Moana is a great way to connect with our family traditions. We love Family Movie Night in our house. When our schedule allows, we try to have one each weekend.

Moana Movie Night - Watching the Movie

Pizza Dinner

We love having pizza for dinner while watching a movie. It’s easy, minimal cleanup, and usually gives us leftovers for lunch the next day. Since we were watching Moana, my daughter said we should have Hawaiian pizza. We also had salad, to make the meal a bit healthier.

Popcorn

Of course, popcorn is a must any time we watch a movie! We prefer to air pop our popcorn using a microwave bowl. We love the Kernel Seasonings lines of toppings. With separate bowls we can all select our own variety.

Disney

Our family has always loved Disney – I have lost count of how many times my daughter has been to the Parks. Our love of Disney has only grown with their recent acquisitions of Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar. Disney movies are a staple of our movie nights. Aside from Moana, our recent Disney Movie Nights have included Ant-Man, and Captain America Civil War. Our next movie night will be Doctor Strange. While Avatar is not a Disney movie, it is also on the schedule before my daughter’s summer trip to Walt Disney World since Pandora – The World of Avatar opens in Animal Kingdom on May 27.

Moana was released on BluRay/DVD on Tuesday, March 7. It is also available on Digital HD (Disney Movies Anywhere, iTunes, Amazon Video, and Google Play).

Disney Movies Anywhere

A Disney Movies Anywhere account manages your Disney digital movies. The Disney Movies Anywhere app is available in various App Stores for different devices (including iOS, Google Play, Amazon Kindle). This allows you to watch the movies on the go. The Disney Movies Anywhere account includes full bonus features for the movie.

You can link your Disney Movies Anywhere account to your other digital accounts – iTunes, Amazon Video, Google Play, Microsoft, Fios by Verizon, and VUDU. You can link one account per provider. I currently have ours connected to my iTunes account.

Google Chromecast

As an Apple family (we have Macs, iPads, iPhone/iPod Touches, and Apple TVs), I was originally skeptical when Disney said that they were sending me a Google Chromecast to watch Moana. My past experience with an Android phone and the Mac OS was not good. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how well the Chromecast worked.

I connected it to one of our HDMI ports and was able mouse my iPhone to set it up. After redeeming my Digital Code on my iPad, I was able to Cast the movie from the Disney Movies Anywhere App on my iPad to the Chromecast. We have had issues using the AppleTVs mirroring function. The Chromecast offered a very smooth casting experience.

Bonus Features with Moana

The Digital HD version of Moana included a number of bonus features. The first thing that we watched was Inner Workings, the short film that preceded Moana in the theater.

We love deleted scenes, so we were thrilled to watch them here. Animated deleted scenes are a little different than live action deleted scenes. They are basically storyboard sketches.

I loved some of the features with background in the movie development. They included some of the footage that I was shown when I attended the animation talk and interviewed animator Amy Smeed. She was even in some of the bonus features.

About Moana

From Walt Disney Animation:

Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one knows exactly why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli‘i Cravalho) meets the mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity. Directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “The Princess & the Frog”), produced by Osnat Shurer (“Lifted,” “One Man Band”), and featuring music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa‘i, “Moana” sails into U.S. theaters on Nov. 23, 2016.
