ROCKIN’ WITH THE SHERIFF EVENT TO HIGHLIGHT SAFE SLEEP FOR INFANTS
Washtenaw Area Council for Children presents a Safe Sleep for Infants family fun event in observance of September as Infant Safe Sleep Awareness Month
Ypsilanti, Mich.—September has been designated as Infant Safe Sleep Awareness Month in Michigan. To highlight the importance of Infant Safe Sleep and preventable infant deaths, Washtenaw Area Council for Children will present “Rockin’ With The Sheriff,” Infant Safe Sleep Family Event on Saturday, September 27, 2014 from 10 AM -2 PM, at Hamilton Crossing, Ypsilanti MI, 48197. Guest of honor will be Sheriff Jerry Clayton who will be available to pose for photos with infants and children. Also invited is Eastern Michigan University’s football team. This fun family event is for the whole family to come out and enjoy good food, fun, childrens’ activities, face painting and great entertainment, while learning how to keep the smallest family members safe.
More than 120 children die every year in Michigan due to unsafe sleep environments. In Washtenaw County, which is one of 12 counties in the state with the highest number of Sudden Unexplained Infant Deaths (SUID)[which includes (SIDS) Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and (ASSB) accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed], black infants are 3x more likely to die from sleep-related deaths than white infants. Many do not realize that by understanding the basics of safe sleep that many of these deaths can be preventable. This event will outline those basics or A-B-Cs: A is for Alone in the crib (i.e. no blankets, quilts, toys, etc.), B is for putting the baby to sleep on its Back, and C is for putting the baby to sleep in its Crib or its own sleep environment on a firm mattress. These are the most important parts of preventing sleep-related deaths and making sleep environments safer.
This event is FREE and there is absolutely no cost to attend.
Washtenaw Area Council for Children is a non-profit agency and the Michigan Children’s Trust Fund designated council for the prevention of child abuse and neglect in Washtenaw County.
Even if you can’t make the event, it is always a good reminder to make sure your infant is sleeping safely.
