Dr. Harold J. Lockett Park Description

Dr. Harold J. Lockett Park, formerly Winchell Park, is a neighborhood park with a sand pit, structure, swings, and a softball field. Ride alongs and sand toys have also been left at the park for visitors to use. (Note ride alongs and sand toys were there on our visit and may disappear or be replaced by others over the years)

A sidewalk surrounds the playground. Rubber mats connect the entrance and bottom of the slides to the sidewalk. While the rest of the playground has mulch, it does qualify as one of our Mess Free Playgrounds since you can access the structure and slides from the rubber mats.

The lower section of the structure has stairs, a small “cargo net” climb, two racer slides and includes a musical activity. My daughter had to stop and play a song.

Winchell Pakr - Playground Profile - Musical Elements

At 11, my daughter liked the loops leading from the low platform to the higher platform which has the spiral slide. As a younger child, she would crawl across these with help. Now, she was able to balance herself and walk across them.

This section of the structure also includes a twisty slide.

Renaming the Park

The park was renamed to Dr Harold J. Lockett Park from Winchell Park in December 2021. Dr. Harold J. Lockett was a child psychiatrist and UM Professor and was elcted the first black president of the Ann Arbor Board of Education in July 1969. Alexander Winchell was a UM professor (n the late 1800s) who promoted eugenics which has prompted the effort to rename the park. His name was already removed from a UM residence hall. (We will see if the road name is also changed in the future).
